Why ‘Moon Trip’?
Something that we get asked a lot here at Moon Trip Productions is “Where did your name come from?”. It’s a fair question! Many people wonder if we deal with interspace travel (no, but we wish). Moon Trip Productions is a full-service videography company offering video and photo packages to help capture your memories and tell your story. We started out as a wedding videography company, but started to notice that our couples still needed us to capture their cool memories and businesses after their weddings were over!
The name “Moon Trip” actually comes from the first narrative film, 1902’s A Trip To The Moon from director Georges Méliès. The story follows a group of wizard-looking astronomers who are embarking on, you guessed it, a trip to the moon! When they make contact with the moon, we get the iconic screenshot below. The astronomers encounter moon-creatures, have an adventure, and return to earth with a moon-man in tow! It is a silent film and was hand-colored, so feel free to experiment and add your own soundtrack if you want to give it a watch!
The director Georges Méliès was actually a magician, which is how he got started in experimenting with film. He realized that through the magic of camera angles and editing, you could make people disappear, reappear, and even go to the moon! He used motion pictures in his magic acts and went on to direct upwards of 500 films! The movie Hugo presents a more fictionalized version of Méliès and his work, with a cool steampunk visual identity. (Don’t worry, this one is modern and has full sound and color). The idea of cinema as a spectacle for people to escape reality and the story of Georges Méliès the magician-turned-director had both been interesting concepts to me all throughout my time in college as a Film and Media major at Georgia State University. I admired Méliès for being eccentric and experimental with his storytelling, set decorations, costumes, and movie making techniques. He truly is one of the fathers of cinema and for his work to still be so interesting and visually impressive after over 100 years is a testament to his artistry and mastery as not only a filmmaker but an overall entertainer of the masses.
